The Trend is Mightier Than The Word

The Doodles That Set a Trend

When I’m home alone with time to spare, I have a tendency to stalk celebrities on their Instagram, particularly the breathtaking Rosie Huntington-Whitely. I’m like obsessed with her clothes, lips, and everything else she does, which is actually how I came across Cyrielle, the visionary artist behind Trendydoodles.  When I saw the drawing she made of my role model, Rosie, I instantly fell in love with the work that she does! Naturally, I too, had to have a trendy doodle!

So I did what any aspiring journalist/blogger would do, I contacted the artist herself to inquire about doing a special doodle for us.  I must say that it was such a pleasurable experience interacting with her.  She is extremely nice, and even granted us the honor of a mini interview about her work.

Here is what the artist had to say:

SB: When & what made you start Trendy Doodles?

C: It’s a bit of a long story: After I finished my studies in art direction, I started looking for a job in an agency. I searched for almost a year getting negative answers after negative answers, and about 3 months ago, I thought I just couldn’t take it anymore so decided to start working for myself. I always thought it was too risky to be a freelance illustrator because you never know if it’s going to work out or if you’ll earn enough money to make a living out of it.   That’s why, in the end, I’m so glad these people said no to me; otherwise, I would have never had the courage to start my own thing. The funny thing is, three weeks after I started Trendydoodles, I had a callback for a job! I didn’t want to drop my new project, so I asked if I could work part time and they said yes!

SB: How old were you when you became interested in drawing?

C: As far as I remember, I’ve always loved drawing. I was very easy as a kid because my parents could just give me a pen and some paper and I would draw quietly for hours!

SB: Okay, I know this is going to sound cliché, but who are your influences?

C: To be honest I don’t think I have any. I try to invent my own style, and I don’t like copying.  It’s unfair to the other artist and there is no honor in taking someone else’s ideas.  There is one artist I admire beyond words: William-Adolphe Bouguereau.  His technique is perfect, and his paintings are so poetic and feminine. I love other painters of course such as Dali, but I don’t want to draw “tortured” or depressing things. My drawings are not deep or meaningful.  I just want to make people happy with cute and positive doodles.

SB: Your doodles are very beautiful, how long would you say it takes you to perfect one of your creations?

C: Thank you! It doesn’t take very long because they are super small. It usually takes between 30 minutes and 1 hour.

SB: If you could have any person (living or dead) sit before you waiting to be “doodle-ized”, who would it be?

C: That’s a good question! The first woman that comes to my mind is Cleopatra because I’m sure she was a great beauty (she had quite a good sense of fashion ).   I would also love to meet Dita Von Teese.  She’s gorgeous and seems like a really nice person.

SB: In let’s say, 5 years, where do you see yourself and your artwork going?

C: I just started building my own e-shop.  I’m going to sell iPhone cases, temporary tattoos, and other girly stuff.  I hope this will work out!  Who knows maybe in 5 years I’ll have the opportunity to illustrate book covers or music albums.   I’m open to any opportunities.  Basically, I’d like it to be my full-time job. I also hope that I will make progress as an artist because my technique is far from being perfect!

We feel so fortunate to have a piece of her artwork!  If you are looking for an adorable, charming, and stylish print to add to your home or office décor, please visit Cyrielle’s Tumblr, Trendydoodles to see her vast array of fashionable doodles.  You can follow her on Facebook and Instagram as well.   Her artwork is free for personal use, but if you would like your very own customized portrait, she can make one just for you, just like she did for us!

This is our very own doodle made by Cyrielle! Don’t you just love it!

The process is easy, and she is the sweetest and super easy to talk to.  All you need to do is email her @ , and let her know what you would like.

The Perfect Lip Crime

Kat Dennings’ lips are perfectly criminal!

So criminal that I needed to know her secret, and found out she likes to wear Lime Crime’s Velvetine liquid-to-matte lip stain!

Via: Lime Crime Tumblr

Which meant that I had to find out just how good these lip stains are.  I went on the Lime Crime website, and I instantly fell in love with their whimsical design of unicorns & hot colors!  It’s kinda like a mashup between Clueless and Urban Outfitters.  The best part is that their products are vegan & cruelty free.

I ordered the red & pink Velvetines to start with.  They had really cool nail polishes, but they were sold out completely, so maybe next time. When I received my velvety smackers, they came in a really cute package with unicorns, pink polka dots, and green tissue with a  lip sticker.  I really liked their attention to detail with it, and how carefully they had wrapped them inside.

I put them on right away!  It’s exactly what the product description says.  It’s liquidy and shiny at first, but it automatically mattes up in a matter of seconds.  It lasts super long ( I dare almost say all day long) which is great because I always have trouble with lipsticks or lip glosses coming off right away.  I was so enamored with them that I went to sleep with my lips done and woke up with smoochable perfection.

I think I found my forever lipstick!!

Bitchin’ Bowties

Why do women have to be the primary focus of red carpet looks?

I, for one, would like the men to also bring their A game to the red rug.  Plain black suits just ain’t cuttin’ it!  That’s why we teamed up with luxury bespoke bow tie maker L ‘a Barr from Bitchin Bowties  to give you a VIP tour of her rockin’ looks that would give the most fashionable women red carpet envy.

Her one of a kind bows are delicately made with such sophistication  They are classy with a rockin’ edge.   We haven’t seen anything out there like them.  What we loved most about the ties is its versatility.  These neck accents have definitely added a flair to my wardrobe, and I have even been stopped on the street for admiration.  Dressed up or dressed down, they are definitely a statement piece that will give people something to talk about.

We are so excited to show you our 8 eight exclusive looks that we created pairing up the bow ties with what we have in our everyday closet.

You simply can’t go wrong with these Bitchin’ Bowties!

*We want to give a very special shout out & thanks to our friend Justin who took time away from his day to be our model for the these great looks!

L.O.L w/ G.B.F

It was a a Sunday night with nothing to do. I had already put on a face mask, soaked in Lavender Epsom salts, and cheated on my diet (it was half a cupcake, ok). All in all, I had felt accomplished but yet I knew there was more I could do.  It was then, I realized, I had time to actually watch a movie. So I browsed around Amazon and stumbled across what would soon become my N.F.M (new favorite movie, of course).

I don’t know if it was the letter and color combo that caught my eye or the fact that “A” from Pretty Little Liars (don’t judge) starred but, all I know is, that was a well spent 92 mins of my life.

This coming of age tale by DarrenStein (Jawbreaker)will have you laughing, “awing” and quoting for weeks. It tells the story of three popular girls that try to compete for a gay best friend. Will he be fierce like Fawcett (Sasha Pieterse)? Over the top like Caprice (Xosha Roquemore)? or Ditzy like ‘Shley (Andrea Bowen)?

Some of my favorite quotes include:

“This is an A and Gay conversation so kindly C your next Tuesday out of it.”

“It’s like when we call you Mormon, but forget the extra m.”

“Everyone can relax, the people that matter have just arrived.”

“I’m strictly dickly.

“You don’t even sound like the ones on Bravo, we can totally gay you over.”

Overall, this movie is like Clueless meets Mean Girls meets Jawbreaker.  Most importantly it had me laughing from beginning to end, and so will you.

So make G.B.F your N.F.M this week!

Street Tale: Spring Simplicity

Taylor Tomasi Hill recently teamed up with Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop to do a guest  editorial piece on NYFW, and I completely fell in love with the simplicity of her fashion picks.

This particular one, where she is wearing a Rosie Assoulin dress, Zara sandals, & a Junya Watanabe jacket, is my favorite! It is clean, simple yet has a dab of edge to it.  Of course, the retail value of what she is wearing is close to $5,000! So I gave myself the task to find a similar style for less.

Here are my picks….

H&M Biker Jacket $200, H&M Strapless Dress $70, Forever21 Retro Cat Eye Sunglasses $6, Zara Jeweled Clutch $70, Jeffrey Campbell Adler Sandal $98

This look is valued under $450!

A great runway look for less.

Confessions W/ Ellie: Spending Habits

Carrie Bradshaw once said, “I like my money right where I can see it…in my closet.” Even though I firmly believe that one should never discuss religion, politics or money I shall place my beliefs on hold and dissert.

Sex and the City 2

In class, we were asked to keep a record of our spending from January 19th to February 15th and based on the information recorded, one might assume that I have a tendency to overspend. The data shows that most of my money was spent on clothing and shoes, which I will not argue because my personal motto has always been, “If I’m not going to be a surgeon, then I need to marry one.” Does that mean I have to break the bank to dress amazing? No, of course not! It’s all about mixing highs and lows, like for example, I love wearing vintage pieces mixed with designer denim and scarves. It’s important to keep a budget or else one might end up like Lindsay Lohan (with a closet full of Chanel and nothing in the bank).

Speaking of… while the chart I completed illustrates my overspending, it also shows that I have a zero balance in my savings! Gasps! Believe me, I am ashamed to even admit it, but I figure somebody’s bound to leave me an inheritance or something, right?

Although I was pleasantly surprised that my school expenses were pretty low, my transportation school expense is high. Ever since I moved to Studio City, I waste so much money on gas it’s ridiculous. That’s mainly the reason why I want to move back to Pasadena.  But it also depends on what University I transfer too and which one of my friends will want to move in with me.

Reflecting on my spending habits, I wish I could say something profound, like, “even if Barneys had an eighty percent off sale, I would resist the urge to buy” but I just can’t.  I will say this, I promise to save! When I saw the pie chart (which btw was my favorite because it’s easy to read), it made me realize that I shouldn’t transfer the automatic monthly savings deduction at a minute’s notice. Who knows, by June I might even have $150 in my savings!

Or not…

DIY: Gold Typography

I have gold rush fever, and I can’t stop giving things the Midas touch!

My recent endeavor is gold typography.  I have been seeing a lot of really great quotes or art in this glamorous medium, and I can’t help but join in on the bling crafting fun.

gold foil print roundup 2.5

Image Via: Peonies + Brass

There a lot of ways you can do the typography art, but I didn’t want to spend any extra money, so I used some items that I already have to create my own little slice of gilded quotable bliss.

Materials I used:

Silhouette, Bic Yellow Gold Permanent Markers $6, White Cardstock, Ikea Frame $4

The quote I chose for my soon to be framed art is the Louise Hay affirmation, “Always Believe Something Wonderful Is About to Happen” because I know that’s a constant thing I need to remind myself everyday.

So I fired up my Silhouette machine, chose a font that I wanted my quote in, and made a stencil with cardstock.  I put the stenciled cardstock over white paper and carefully taped each side.  I then colored it in using the Yellow Gold Bic marker on white paper.

Optional: You can also give it some extra sparkle by adding some glitter for a little twinkle.  I used some gold glitter  by spraying a little adhesive and then sprinkling it randomly on the paper.  I let dry overnight just to make sure & then framed it in an Ikea frame.

Here is my finished creation! I can’t wait to do more.  I think next time I will play around with some gold foil.
